Garbage & Recycling

Private Waste Collection

Long Lake Heights uses a private waste collection service — separate from the City of Nanaimo’s residential pickup. Collection runs every Monday, alternating between two schedules:

  • Week A: Recycling + Organics
  • Week B: Garbage + Organics

Organics (food scraps and yard waste) are collected every week.

The current collection provider is Emterra Environmental at 250-716-3340.

Check the community calendar for the current collection schedule, or  click on  LLH Garbage Schedule 2026

What Goes in the Recycling Bin

The list below covers what Emterra accepts in your blue/recycling bin. When in doubt about a specific item, the Nanaimo Recycles app (iOS and Android) has a searchable lookup.

What Goes Where — Other Items

For items not covered above, use the City of Nanaimo’s waste sorting tool — it covers a broad range of household items and is kept current.

On Collection Day

Put your bins out the morning of collection — not the night before. Wildlife, including bears, are active in our neighbourhood year-round. An unsecured bin left overnight is an invitation.

  • All garbage must be inside your bin with the lid fully closed — loose bags will not be collected and attract wildlife
  • Bins should be at the curb (or your designated collection point) by 7:00 a.m.
  • Bring bins in the same day once they’ve been emptied

Spotted a bear? Report sightings to the BC Conservation Officer Service at 1-877-952-7277.

Large Items & Special Waste

Bulky items, appliances, and hazardous materials are not picked up curbside.

  • City of Nanaimo Public Works — 250-758-5222 — for large item pickup scheduling
  • Regional District of Nanaimo (RDN) facilities — for hazardous household waste, electronics, and items that can’t go curbside. See RDN Waste & Recycling for depot locations and hours.

Yard Waste: Red Bin Program

The community runs a Red Bin Program twice a year — spring and fall — for larger volumes of yard waste like branches, brush, and clippings. This is especially useful for spring FireSmart cleanup.

→ See the Red Bin Program page for details and dates.
