Red Bin Program
About the Program
Long Lake Heights runs a Red Bin Program twice a year — spring and fall — giving residents a convenient way to dispose of larger volumes of yard waste that don’t fit in the regular organics bin.
Large roll-off bins are placed at three locations around the community for a weekend window. Residents bring their yard waste during that window; bins are picked up shortly after.
When It Runs
- Spring: Typically the May long weekend, combined with the community’s annual FireSmart preparation push
- Fall: Typically a weekend in mid-November — bins are dropped off Friday and picked up the following week
Exact dates are announced through the community calendar and the Facebook group. Watch for the No Parking signs that go up at bin locations the day before drop-off.
Bin Locations
Bins are placed at three spots around the strata:
- Marsh Wren Place — just up from the mailboxes
- Summit Drive near Heron — visitor parking area
- Salal Drive at Summit — visitor parking area

What Goes In
Landscape waste and cuttings only:
- Branches and brush
- Garden trimmings and hedge clippings
- Leaves
- Woody and green yard material
Fill toward the back of the bin so others have room. Bins may only be filled to wall height — overfilling results in additional charges to the strata.
What Does Not Go In
- Tree pruning debris (large limbs, trunk sections)
- Plastic bags or any non-organic material mixed in with yard waste
- Garbage or household waste
- Soil, rocks, or stumps
- Construction or renovation debris (lumber, drywall, shingles, concrete)
- Treated wood
Construction and renovation waste must go through a private hauler or an RDN facility. See the Garbage & Recycling page for disposal options.
A Few Things to Keep in Mind
- Please clean up any material that falls onto the pavement around the bin
- Respect the No Parking signs at bin locations — these are in place to keep access clear
- The program continues because residents use it responsibly. Council reviews it annually, and community care directly supports its continuation.
Connection to FireSmart
The spring Red Bin weekend doubles as a FireSmart preparation event. Clearing combustible yard debris — branches, dead wood, dry clippings — from around your home is one of the most effective steps you can take to reduce wildfire risk.
→ See the FireSmart Program page for more on what to prioritize during spring cleanup.
